MCA Selection Procedure

Admission to a MCA course is through entrance tests, which are conducted separately by different universities. The entrance test comprises of:

  • Written Exam
  • Group Discussion
  • Personal Interview

The selection to most of the colleges in India is through written test only, but for some colleges like DU, IMT, Symbiosis (MPIT), there is an interview/GD for the candidates short-listed after the written test. Most of the MCA written exams are purely objective in nature, but a few tests also have a mix of objective, short-answer, and long-answer types of questions.

Written Exam

The MCA entrance written exam is the first phase, usually have questions based on higher mathematics (sometimes B.Sc. level) and reasoning. It comprises of four major sections:

  • Mathematics
  • Computer Awareness
  • Analytical Ability & Logical Reasoning
  • Elementary English Awareness
The test is generally of 2-3 hours duration. Negative marking may or may not be there. The number of seats for the MCA program is very limited. For MCA Entrance Tests of different colleges, there are different syllabi. Hence, it is difficult to have an integrated approach while preparing for these.

The extremely competitive nature of the test necessitates a focused preparation supplemented by sustained practice over a long period of time and under competent guidance. One needs to be essentially good at higher mathematics, as most of the MCA Entrance Tests comprise Mathematics (up to XII standard), Statistics, and a little knowledge about Computers.

Group Discussion & Personal Interview

The second phase of selection procedure assesses the personality attributes like communication skills, confidence level, attitude, analytical thought process, leadership ability etc. It comprises of two stages:

  • Group Discussion – Discussion among a group of 8-12 candidates, on a topic of current importance is evaluated by a panel of judges
  • Personal Interview – Interview is taken by a panel of specialists

Final selection is based on marks in the written exam and the GD/PI. Work experience, 10 th & 12 th standard marks are given additional weightage in most of the institutes.

Eligibility Criteria

Getting admission to an MCA course is not easy. Candidates need to match certain eligibility pre-requisites in order to qualify for this program.

According to rules, a bachelorís degree holder from any discipline who has also studied Mathematics as a subject at 10+2 or graduation level and scored not less than 45% is eligible to apply. In case of reserved category, the required percentage is generally relaxed by 5%. Further, there are also some institutes which prefer graduate candidates with first class scores in Maths.

The entrance exams of top MCA/PG Diploma program are held between January and June every year. The preparation for MCA Entrance Test easily takes 5-6 months, with a consistent daily input of about 3-4 hours per day. This requires lot of short-cuts, time-saving-techniques, and a proper guidance; without which, it becomes difficult to clear the test.
